Hello,

I think casino's in hawaii will create a construction boom creating thousands of jobs. I suppose every industry have a draw back. What may help in geting casino's approve is some of the generated funds from it go toward drug, alcohol, gambleing, treatment programs. Directing money to education of kids in schools as the lottery in georgia and other states does. Fund communty service centers for adults from young to seniors. Those are the real voters.

Or set up some type of a once a year dividend payment where every body get some kind of check from the profits of the casino's simiular to alaska oil dividend check program. Unfortuantely in to days world some people want to know " whats in it for them" before they vote for or approve something. Its just the facts of life. To me thats the quickest way to get the ok on starting and or building casino's in any state. But then again im no politician. Just a working tax payer who wants to see other people have a job and work.

It would have to be massive layoffs, buisnesses closing, a severe cut in federal, state and local services to move people to approve other wise. The other way it can be done and they dont need any bodys approval to my knowledge is through casino ships. The casino ship picks up its gamblers at the hawaii docks sails out to international date line waters. Where they are free to gamble and then return them back to hawaii. It would take a pretty fast ship to get their and back if the dateline is a long way from port. Most of these ships provide food, recreation, entertainment as a cruise ship does. In cities where the cruise ship casino operate they have seen a construction boom. Like new buisnesses or buisness exspansions pop up. And of course related buisness or job increases. So what do you all think?

Romero,
The gambling boats dont have to be over the international date line, just 3 miles offshore, I believe.
The US EEZ extends 200 miles from the shoreline, easily including all but the most ambitious of trips, so the feds will still regulate the industry, and of course tax the hell out of it.
Legalized gambling sounds like a good source of revenue, until you think about the people who will feed such an industry. One should never gamble unless he can afford to loose. In these tough economic times, I doubt that many of us are in this category.

Kapnd,

I understand your point of view. Casino's are not the cure all to any state fisical problems no more than a manufacturing plant or factory. Any state must diversify its employment. It has been reported that as much as $100 million dollars plus is lost from hawaii by its citizens and visitors yearly to on line gambling, las vegas and other casino gambling states. Money that could have been spent and kept in hawaii for more jobs, infrastructure, education, numerous buisnesses exspanding, jobs, associated services. etc.
Casino gambling is no more gambling or different from bingo gambling. Even some churches play bingo inside of them for money. And sponser casino gambling trips for its congregation members for various reasons. Some of which congregation members who win contribute money to the operation of the church. Help provide daycare services for kids, etc. Casino's also offer other family type entertainment other than gambling. Some even have theme parks with roller coasters, ferriswheels etc. Casinos are another form of entertainment as well. Research shows that more and more people seek entertainment when their is a bad economy or the nation is at war. Movie theaters made record profits despite the bad economy last year. People want to take their minds of of all the bad news all the time in the world.
Gambling is voluntarily, as is tobacco, alcohol, owning a gun, watching whats on tv or the internet, etc. With or with out casino's there has always been the rich, poor and middle class people. There has always been the homeless, mental, violent, and abusive people, etc.,and always will be. Life itself is a gamble. You put your hard earn money into buying a new car, hopeing that it doesnt have a recall or serious safety defect that will leave you or some one else permanet injured, disable, or dead. Driving period is a gamble, climbing a ladder, going to a store, mall, school, work, where some deranged gunman may injure or kill you. Even in church people have been killed. Etc. Its a gamble when jobs are moved overseas. Its a gamble when we put our hard earned money in banks, morgages, stock markets, savings and loans. Or in insurance companys that may or may not honor your claim.
America took the bigest most exspensive gamble in America's history in fighting a war in vietnam, Iraq, etc., in lost lives, the permanetly injured, and billions of dollars spent already and the estimated five trillion that will be spent taking care of the veterans of those wars for the rest of their lives. and we have nothing to show for it. We get very little oil from Iraq. At least with a casino any one who visit it will get something back even if it aint nothing but entetainment. Or having a good time. The casino will provide jobs before, during ,and after construction. One more job for one more American. Thats one less person unemployed, on welfare or homeless, etc.
Puting our hard earned money into sending jobs overseas, crooked banks, mortgage companys, stock markets, savings and loans, insurance companys, wall street, etc., has produced more homeless, alcohol, tobacco abuse, prostitution, crime, legal and illegal druge abuse, violence, seperations and devorces, physical, emotional, mental abuse, deaths, etc., than all the Casino's in America combined. Puting America in the worst economy since the great depression. They have affected the lives of the young, elderly, and everything in between. Men, women, and the kids. Even the dog and cats.

It takes a lot of losers to make one winner.
If you can feel good about that, you have no heart for the poor bastards that played away their paycheck instead of buying groceries for their families.
You probably liked the pyramid scheme too.
I just don't see it as the answer to the great questions of life.
There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Hawaii is natures own playground, and I personally dont need a theme park, a casino or a hollywood movie to enjoy it.

I doubt that our spineless beurocracy will ever make gambling legal here, but they are sure to spend millions of our hard earned tax dollars in the debate of it, masters of trivial pursuit that they are!

Unfortunately, every day life is wining or looseing. We may or may not plan to do five things for the day. And we may win, and accomplish all five things planed. Or we may accomplish two for the day and loose. And may be the rest another day or time. We all have our good days and bad days. Some times we have a streak of good luck in between.
Sports have winners and loosers. Some people take a gamble and pay money for tickets in hope of seeing their favorite team win. So a lot of tickets were sold to make one winning team. Money that they could have bought groceries for their family with. But they voluntarily took a gamble and bought sports tickets instead. May be they didnt feed their family by buying the tickets, but a lot of other familys got feed from the sale of the tickets. And those ticket sales provided jobs for many people. American jobs for Americans.
We can no more control what people say or do in America, no more than we can live in a tax free america, or growing old, get sick and die or control the wheather. There were millions of Americans who took a gamble and played the stock market and wall street through various means and lost, instead of buying groceries for their familys.
There are people who dont gamble and still dont buy groceries for themselves or their familys. There is no one shoe that fits all to the great questions of life, and you and I dont advocate such. I never sugested a free lunch for any one. Every thing has two sides, or up and down, draw backs, or good and bad, or a price.Like insurance companys for an example. Even religion have good and bad to it. Its real life in the world we live in. What you and I like or dont like, or would like to see or dont see, there are thousands and thousands of hawaiian's who like or dont like, or want to see or dont want to see the same things. No matter what I or you say or do people or going to decide for themselves what is good or bad. How they want to live or dont live. How they want to enjoy life. Some jobs are better than no jobs. For those who want the casino's and jobs, they will vote for it. Those that dont will vote against it. And according to the latest data those who want casino's are three to one in their favor. So it is a lot more people in hawaii that want casiono's than dont. Apparently some people feel that since casino's are a legal established buisness in America that they should have a personal choice to decide for themselves if they want to go to a casino or not And not for some one else to deney them or decide for them. If some one dont like what they see or hear on tv or the internet they can change the channel or turn it off. Same with radio. But no body else decide for them if they can or can not watch tv or listen to the radio. How many people do you know would vote against creating jobs for hawaiian's and deversifying hawaii's employment?
